Winter Constellations

2009

A collaborative presentation that cast theatre students as planetarians who brought the winter skies to life. Winter Constellations intertwined mythological characters with contemporary astronomy. Based on a script developed by Robin Mello and Jean Creighton it communicated science by engaging audiences with songs and stories.

"By telling myths and legends from folk literature we engaged the audiences' interest" said Mello, "then we introduced the science. We began with concepts and discoveries made by ancient Arabian, Greek, Indian, and European astronomers" adds Creighton. "It gave people an opportunity to understand the narrative of where we came from, and where we are going."

The presentation concluded by considering some of the more famous (and infamous) objects in the sky today including answers about the Universe's origin, variable stars, and supernovas.
